The Medical Education experience
Micaela Antonius
I am a trainee about to embark on my 4th year of renal training in Wales. My training is 5 years long with the option to apply to take time out of training for a PHD or MD if desired. My main area of interest is centred around medical education and I chose to undertake a specific qualification in this field. I am currently in my 2nd year of a 3-year part-time medical education MSc delivered through Cardiff University. The course involves 2 face-to-face teaching days every few months.
Pros:
- Ability to learn new teaching techniques – I have noticed a significant improvement in the feedback I receive since starting the course
- Lots of opportunities to get involved in medical student teaching sessions, along with opportunities to teach juniors on the ward and improve the educational sessions for allied healthcare professionals
- Can complete alongside clinical training, meaning no time out of training programme
- World-renowned course with Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy upon completion of the 1st year
- Option to do the e-learning course, rather than face-to-face
Cons:
- Philosophical style of essay writing initially quite daunting, but lots of guidance given
- Fitting in assignments around work commitments sometimes difficult
